17 May Agreement

The coalition agreement ends an impasse that has lasted for more than 500 days. During this period, the country held three elections that were held and neither side won a direct victory. The agreement ended the 1948 Arab-Israeli war between Israel and Lebanon and provided for a continued withdrawal of Israeli forces on the condition of creating a Lebanese army “safe zone” in southern Lebanon along the border area. It contained numerous clauses detailing security cooperation between Lebanon and Israel to prevent the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and other groups from infiltrating border areas. .
