Bio:

John R. Selig grew up in Huntington, NY and except for a 15-month stint in Scottsdale, Arizona in the mid 90s he has lived in Dallas, Texas since 1985. Selig and his husband, Rodolfo Arredondo, married at a wedding ceremony attended by family and friends in Toronto, Canada in April 2004.

Selig is a gay parent whose son, Nathaniel, continued to live with him after Selig and his former wife divorced in 1991 (they co-parented their son through his teen years). Nathaniel and his wife, Doris, made Selig and Rodolfo proud doting grandfathers to their grandson, Cameron, in 2008.

Selig worked in the marketing and advertising field and remains a gay activist, free-lance photographer, writer, blogger with plans of restarting his. Selig plans to relaunch his “John Selig Outspoken” Podcast which he launched in 2007 but let lapse several years ago. The podcast features conversations with LGBT role models, opinion leaders and writers as well as Selig’s commentaries. Selig’s podcast is available from many sources including Apple Podcasts. In January 2015 Selig added a blog to his website. Selig’s immediate plans are to update this website to include photos that he has taken over the past 5-7 years, restart his blog along with the podcast. Unfortunately, his productivity was impacted by COVID-19 and extensive dental work. But motivation has returned so stay tuned and continue to watch this website for updates.

Selig plans to write a book that will feature comments about his life and worldview called “John Selig Outspoken: The Book.” He will continue to read some content for the book on select episodes of his John Selig Outspoken podcast on once he relaunches the podcast.

Selig contributed profiles and photographs and was a Consulting Editor to the award-winning book “Uncommon Heroes” and was a contributor to the book “Telling Tales Out of School,” which was edited by Kevin Jennings, who was Executive Director of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) at the time the book, was published and is now Chief Executive Officer of Lambda Legal.

Selig has written and photographed feature articles for A&U magazine and has written Op-Ed Pieces for the Dallas Morning News, Arizona Republic and Mesa Tribune and articles for the Dallas Voice and Texas Triangle. He has written book reviews for ForeWord Magazine and the Lambda Book Report. Selig has been written about in the Dallas Voice, Texas Triangle, Long Islander, Dallas Morning News, New York Times, Newsday and U.S. News & World Report and has appeared on the Donahue and Rolonda television shows and numerous radio shows around the country as well as a variety of LGBT and mainstream podcasts. For Valentine’s Day in 2005 Selig’s commentary on his marriage to Rodolfo aired on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition.” Selig was a regular guest on “Conversations with Rick Vanderslice,” an Internet radio show on Rational Broadcasting. His photographs have appeared in newspapers, magazines, books and CD liners and also on web sites.

Selig was a member of the StopDrLaura.com National Steering Committee and received the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance (DGLA) President’s Award in 2001 for his activism in organizing gay community response against the airing of the “Dr. Laura” TV show. During the summer of 2000 Selig co-authored a policy recommendation for the Al Gore for President campaign that was presented to the Vice President’s staff during a campaign visit in Dallas.

In February 2015 Selig was the keynote speaker at the 2015 Out for Health Summit where he spoke offering suggestions on how medical professionals could be LGBT advocates/activists in their own lives and practices.

Multiculturalism has played a strong role in Selig’s life. He was active in AFS International/Intercultural Programs for fifteen years, where he held various leadership positions (including Chapter President and Area Representative) and hosted students from Switzerland and Belgium and an English teacher from the People’s Republic of China. During the first half of his senior year of college Selig studied British broadcasting at the Polytechnic of Central London in England in 1973 and during the second half of his senior year he studied the European Union at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium in 1974. During most of his time as a graduate student at The University of Chicago Selig lived in International House, a graduate student dorm with 500 students (half from the U.S. and the other half from 80 other countries).

Selig has an MBA in Marketing from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and has a BA in Economics from the Binghamton University (formerly known as the State University of New York at Binghamton).
