John Selig Outspoken – Episode 13 (MP3, 68MB, 60min)
Skip Allen

Episode 13 – This is part 1 of 3 parts – Skip Allen shares his family’s harrowing story. Skip, who is the gay, is the son of the former President of the Southern Baptist Convention. Skip’s dad was the personal pastor to President Jimmy Carter, before, during and after President Carter was in the White House. This story was covered by the New York Times, Dateline NBC and ABC’s 20/20. Our 3 hour interview is broken into 3 episodes. I first heard this story at a Dallas PFLAG meeting in 1997. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience and the story has haunted me ever since. I am being somewhat vague in expressing details so as not to spoil the story. You don’t want to miss this one!

Thanks Gary. Please identify yourself the next time you see me having a cup of coffee at the Crossroads Market solving the problems of the world. I am pleased that you are enjoying the podcasts and hope that you enjoy the remaining two episodes with Skip Allen. The problems with my voice being softer have hopefully been resolved. When I switched over to Skype for my phone calls the sound quality should have taken a quantum leap forward. Let me know if you are still noticing a problem with future podcasts.

John, I was a member of Cockrell Hill Baptist Church when Jimmy Allen was pastor there. My mom took care of all the Allen kids when they were in the nursery. I always liked to listen to Dr Allen preach. He did a lot of great things. He was the last president of the Southern Baptist convention before the Fundamentalist took over. I really am looking forward to hearing these podcasts. I am one of the regulars at the Crossroads coffee shop. I have really enjoyed all of your podcasts. Keep up the great work. Just a side note. On lots of the podcasts, I really have a hard time hearing you.

Thanks,
Gary

Excellent show John. Your shows have all been with just tremendously important and facinating people. You just outdo yourself every episode.

Skip has a very compelling story. I don’t follow religion so I don’t know him or his family historically but wow what a life he’s led! The oddest thing for me is how he can still believe or subscribe to god after all that has happened to him in his life.
